Near the mountains of Fagaras
The Citadel lies, laid upon an inaccessible hillside
Unconquerable fortress, surrounded by myths
Poenari, so it was called
Flying above ancient ruins
Where history was written in blood
Over massive hills
Watching the thousands of stairs leading upwards,
in my dreams
Hundreds of years have passed
Since the last ruler
He was a son of the dragon, prince of darkness
His might and glory is eternal
Still living today in dark legends

Where shadows whisper
and wind sign its songs
There among the rocks
and in hollows of the trees
A small and beauteous bird
Is on the prowl
Symbol of infinite wisdom
All-seeing
and almighty creature
Who holds guard
Upon its wooden throne
Observing the daily cycle
An immortal queen
The cold of her eyes...
...watches the mountain sides

Funeral winds blow through the snowy land
Frost bites under the skin and blood coagulates in the veins
Somewhere in the distance, howling of wolves is to be heard
Children of the night are lurking in their sites
A landscape so mysterious and magical,
Decrepit by misery and fright
Where the old count survives deep in the mountains
During cold and long nights
Inside his dwelling he remembers that day
When the moon is full and casts its light
Then all around they know
That each year
The ball of vampires invites its guests to a feast

Alone I wander athwart His night
Father of sorrows and past
Dazzling owllight unlocks the pathways
Until one day His wings will
sweep down the stars
Without end you roam this mountain pass
What have you seen - in the land of phantoms?
The icy fortress near the firmament
Is it made of our horrors only -
or are those walls of stone?
My eyes were open to the twilight
And I can no longer speak
of fleshly matters
From the bastions I have seen the Abyss
and am now blinded to the world.

Evil in its cruelest shape,
chafing its hands
Sleepless nights
And eternal days
Fear from what was never known
Exorbitance of own thoughts
Enthralled by helplessness
Death was never so close
Destiny gambles with you
Like a beast lurking for its prey
At the end of a new age
This fact will forever be in my memory...
